Did you know that the tv series, In the Heat of the Night was filmed right here in the state of Georgia?
In the Heat of the Night starring Carrol O’Conner as a small town sheriff and Howard E. Rollins Jr. who played the sheriff’s fellow lieutenant brought in viewers each and every week.

The show was based in Sparta, Mississippi but was filmed right here in Covington, Georgia. There is even a photo of the show with the Covington courthouse in the background.
The residents around Covington became quite used to the filming and the crew. Some of the residents were even hired to be extras on the show. Several businesses throughout Covington helped to serve the film crew with food or anything else that might have been needed.
In the Heat of the Night went on to recieve many awards including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Drama Series and a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Television Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special.
The show had several nominations for many awards including two Best Proformance by an Actor in a Television Series nominations, two Best Television Series nominations and three Best Proformance by an Actor in a Television Series.
Lois Nettleton was nominated for the Primetime Emmy, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
